Matthew Airola is a Senior Research Associate with 20 years of experience in GIS, database development, Android programming, and research methodology. He has expertise in developing GIS applications and creating data collection applications. He has used Java, ArcGIS, Python, Visual Basic, R, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MS Access to collect, organize, analyze, and manage large datasets in support of epidemiologic, transportation, and environmental research.
Airola’s application development experience includes developing Android applications used to record observations of seatbelt use. His work has been used for the past 10 years as the data collection instrument for the National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS). The application records observations, location data, and other ancillary variables securely transmitted to research servers and stored for analysis. Airola’s transportation research experience includes selecting PSUs and sites using GIS, and his current projects include developing several new field data collection applications for use in several occupant restraint studies and distracted driving.
